At least half of the ones we have tested were completely distorted and could not put out a clean signal even at its lowest level. The SMD HLC-2 puts out a clean signal all the way up to 10.3v. You might not ever need that much but it is there if you do! Particularly if you have 8 or more bass amps all feeding off of one signal. Other then something like that, somewhere in the 4-6v range is all you need, and this one does it distortion free! No clipping, none of that! This video describes how I installed a line output converter in my 1984 volkswagen rabbit cabriolet. Since I wanted to keep my stock radio which doesn't support RCA output, I had to install a line out converter (LOC) which would give me the RCA output needed to hook up my kenwood amp.
