Mission will be celebrating its 30th birthday this year, and has built a reputation for combining style with innovative engineering through three decades. The last few years have seen changes of ownership and the company has joined other famous British hi-fi names (Quad, Wharfedale, Audiolab) under the Chinese-owned International Audio Group (IAG) banner. That said, continuity of design has been fully maintained, and extracting these M66is from their cartons brought a real feeling of déja vu. This might be a new model, but its roots are clearly seen in the V63 and M53 models. There are a number of detail differences, for sure, but the driver configurations and enclosure dimensions are virtually the same, so it's clear that this M66i is essentially a development of its predecessors. The most obvious change concerns the price, which at £495 per pair is £100 less than its predecessors, but one contributing factor here is presumably that a decent quality vinyl woodprint has replaced real wood for surface decoration. That change may well be related to the relatively complex enclosure shape, which is fattest around the middle, and tapers towards the front and the back. It's a two-way d'Appolito design, in which twin bass/mid drivers are placed above and below a solitary tweeter (providing plenty of cone area while keeping the front panel nice and slim). See me put the new Rockford Fosgate Punch PBR300x2 mini class BR amp though the OldSchoolStereo.com labs test bench. See RMS power output tests at 4 and 2 ohms stereo and 4 ohms mono. I also demo the PBR300x2 using my recently built Rockford RFA-414 AUDIOphile bookshelf speakers, a trio of JL Audio 8W6 subs wired at 4 ohms mono and a mid 90's Phoenix Gold XVR4 tri-mode crossover handling all of the x-over duties. I used the trusty SMD DD-1 and Velleman HPS50 to measure RMS output wattage powered by a beefy Audio Authority Model 2/77 Hybrid 13.4V power supply. My results were not as impressive as Rockford's PVC "birth sheet", but they also use a higher voltage (14.4) and use a sophisticated PowerCube resistor network instead of a basic dummy load resistor network. This PBR300x2 turned out to pack a lot of power in a small package! Many people are using these for stealth installs in cars, motorcycles, ATV's, scooters and other 12v applications where a small, high powered amp is required. There have been many threads on the Harley Davidson forums with folks buying these up to use on their bikes. Step-by-step instructions for making a tunable crystal radio. This is a radio that gets its power from the radio waves. I made it almost entirely from junk except for the diode (1N34 germanium diode) and the earpiece (though you can use a speaker from a phone instead.) The capacitor is made from aluminum foil and a paper towel roll. The coil is rolled on a toilet paper roll. The wire is enameled magnet wire. For the antenna I use a 15 foot wire laid out on the floor. For the earth ground I connect a wire to the ground in the household wiring. I was getting frustrated in not being able to find a sample of this version of the song to share with others, so I decided to make my own. I took it from their Walking on a Wire CD, set it to the album cover, and put in the lyrics. A couple notes: 1. My purpose was to get the song up to not only share a great song, but to bring attention to Lowen & Navarro as a singing/songwriting duo. They wrote a lot of fantastic songs, many of which I grew up on. Unfortunately, Eric Lowen was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) 5 years ago and is no longer able to sing and play, but Dan Navarro still continues with his solo career.
